Recommended Reading and Listening:
I am so old school, and am still just learning about the world of podcasts and apps—there are some wonderful resources out there! One that my husband and I have been especially loving is a prayer app that was recommended to us by a friend who lives and works to make the Good News known overseas. (Thanks, J!) It is called Lectio 365, and features a morning and evening opportunity for guided prayer. It has been such a lovely and fruitful addition to our devotional time, and I pray it will be a blessing to you, too. Here is a link to their website...
I've recommended this book before, and am eager to do so again. Have you ever wondered how all of the lovely things we take for granted in our society came to be? Our notions of justice, equality, humanity, rationality, and so much more come straight out of the Bible and of the goodness of God. Told from a uniquely eastern perspective, this explanation of our culture will be so helpful to build your understanding and to inform your prayers.
Here's a favorite periodical that I'd love to tell you about -
I hope you already know about this treasure of a resource, but if you don't, please allow me to tell you how much I love Christian History. Younger friends, if you have never signed up to have a print magazine delivered to your mailbox, start with this one. It always makes me so happy to see it arrive! Each issue is packed with interesting and informative articles, timelines, pictures, and recommendations for further reading on the people, places, and moves of God that collectively represent Christian history. More than ever, we need to understand where we come from to better understand where we are and where we are going. Take a look at their social media and website, and enjoy!
Are you familiar with this amazing person? Missionary, linguist, mentor, godly Christian woman - she was incredible. I have read several of her books over the years (Passion and Purity, Keep a Quiet Heart, Through Gates of Splendor - all of which I highly encourage you to find and read), but a friend told me about this podcast, and now I feel like I can't wait to buy every book she ever wrote!
Please give this a listen. It is a collection of her old radio programs, different conference sessions she taught, recollections and memories from relatives, friends, and colleagues, and much more. Elisabeth is both as encouraging and as no-nonsense as they come, and she saw and experienced so much in her walk with God that she freely and generously shared for decades. I have learned so much, and been stretched so much in every episode I have heard. So many of us are looking for healthy, godly mentors in our lives, and I'm so grateful her family and friends rallied to make this podcast possible. Now a whole new generation can benefit from her wisdom and help. |
